Ever wonder how basketball came about? It was first invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. He came up with the idea of this sport when he moved to YMCA Training School in Massachusetts. Naismith was faced with a challenge to find a sport suitable for the children to play inside during the winter and a game that requires skills. By incorporating a childhood game, duck-on-a-rock, Naismith came up with a new sport called basketball. This new game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets. Every time the ball went into the basket, the ball was manually taken out.
Before the 1950s basketball was continued to play with a soccer ball until the design of the ball used today came out. Nowadays basketball is played almost all over the world and is one of the most popular sports played. Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five players play against each other. This sport can be played professionally (NBA, WNBA), for leisure, or in school.
Basketball consists of a basketball court, a ball and two baskets. The rectangular shaped court is where the game is played and is maximum 90 feet long and 50 feet wide and minimum 74 feet wide and 42 feet wide. The ball is called a basketball is an orange inflated ball. There is a men's ball and a women's ball. A men's ball is about 9.55 inches (24.26 cm) in diameter and a women's ball is about 9.23 inches (23.44 cm) in diameter. The baskets are placed at the end line of each court and are 10 feet above the floor. The metal rim of the hoop is 18 inches in diameter, which is about double in diameter of the ball itself.
The purpose of this game is to get the most points scored than your opponent. A team gets a score by shooting the basketball successfully through a hoop. The ball can be dribbled with one hand or passed from players. The team who possesses the ball is the offense and the team that blocks and guards is defense. After a good game of basketball, the team with the most points scored wins.
